Welcome to the first edition of the official Mills & Levine Newsletter!  Our firm has always been dedicated to advocating the rights of our clients, and now we’re assisting the public at large by making our website into a leading source of information concerning North Carolina personal injury law.  This newsletter is just one of many new features coming to the website.  Check here at least every month – we’ll have new features and new newsletters allowing you to get the latest information about our firm and North Carolina personal injury law.

Before we go any further, let me introduce myself. My name is Thomas Gooden and I’m an attorney who officially joined Mills & Levine in August of 2009 after interning here during law school.  I was born in Charlotte and have called Mooresville home my entire life.  I’m a graduate of Wake Forest University, where I earned a business degree at the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy.  From there, I received my juris doctor from Widener University School of Law and was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar the following summer.  My focus is Social Security Disability, but I’m involved in all of the firm’s practice areas, including personal injury, motor vehicle accidents, litigation, worker’s compensation, and real estate.

Shortly after I joined, Mills & Levine welcomed back a retuning employee, Hope White.  Hope also hails from Mooresville and previously worked for Mills & Levine from 1999 to 2006 as a legal assistant handling personal injury and motor vehicle accidents.  We are now very happy to introduce her as our new legal assistant for litigation.  She will assist our attorneys in all stages of litigation, including interrogatories, depositions, hearings, and trials.

Now that introductions and welcome-backs are out of the way, let’s talk about what we do at Mills & Levine.  One of our biggest areas of practice is representing people who were injured in a motor vehicle accident due to someone else’s negligence.  Without an attorney, insurance companies and their adjusters can and will use a litany of excuses and half-truths in order to get people to give away their full rights.  This is where we can help – we’ll become the ones the insurance companies deal with, we’ll do the research to find all the possible insurance claims, and we’ll fight to ensure your rights are fully enforced and you receive a fair and just compensation for your injuries.

To illustrate, let’s look at a recent case Mills & Levine handled.  A parent had wrecked her vehicle in a rainstorm, injuring her three children.  Two had minor cuts and scrapes, but one had broken bones with over $40,000 in medical bills.  The insurance adjuster visited the parent and offered to pay her the policy limits of $50,000 and said “that’s all there is.”

Luckily the parent called Mills & Levine for help.  We investigated and discovered the adjuster had two more policies with more money available for the child.  The adjuster initially refused to pay this money, but backed down after we gave our legal argument. Mills & Levine was able to double the settlement to $100,000 and increase the recovery.

In the end, all the child’s medical bills were paid and the child has enough money to pay for college or a house after high school. Without Mills & Levine, the parent would have lost the child $50,000.

I hope this newsletter offered some insights into what Mills & Levine can do for you. Next month, I’ll be breaking down the anatomy of a good car insurance policy and a bad one. You can also look forward to newsletters authored by our other attorneys, including our partners Michael Levine and N.C. House Representative Grey Mills.  Remember, if you’ve been injured in a car accident, hurt on the job, denied in your application for Social Security Disability benefits, or just want to speak with an attorney, don’t hesitate to contact us.
